The final concert of Picosa’s season takes us through the vast and hence rich journey of life, filled with joy, complexity, wonder, and loss. Cambodian-American composer Chinary Ung was the first winner of the University of Louisville’s prestigious Grawemeyer award and went on to win awards from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations and more, eventually becoming included in the highly respected Academy of Arts and Letters. Ung’s Child Song for flute, violin, cello, and piano is a richly woven tapestry of Asian and Western contemporary textures and complex harmonies characteristic of Ung’s truly beautiful music. David Devasto is Assistant Professor of Music at Elmhurst College. Picosa premiered his rhythmically driving and clever Synchronic Dances in 2018 at the North Central College Sounds of New Music Festival. Picosa is especially honored to have premiered Shulamit Ran’s new duo for flute and clarinet, Ode to Nina (title tbd?) written in honor of the passing of artist Nina Frenkel. Frenkel’s art will be on display during the performance, and as a prelude and postlude to the concert. Finally, we close the season and bring it full circle with an encore performance of Jonathon Kirk’s masterful setting of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring an embodiment of American style and landscape.
