Flutes Voices Masquerade treats the mask as a performance identity that reveals myriad musical images underneath. From the elegant arabesques of Takemitsu’s Masques pour deux flûtes to the flamboyant video images of Jacob TV’s Lipstick, for flutes and boombox, the concert will play with music of madness, voices of women worldwide, and the words of Dada poet Hugo Ball. Virtuosic performers of new music, Gillen-Hannau and Misurell-Mitchell have assembled a program which ranges from Luciano Berio’s classic Sequenza I, for solo flute to Misurell-Mitchell’s Brechtian After the History, for voice/flute and percussion, to the world premiere of Song, for flute, alto flute and piano by Jonathan Hannau. The brilliant theatrical piece, Pirouette on a Moon Sliver, for solo flute by Amy Beth Kirsten and Misurell-Mitchell’s impassioned Profaning the Sacred II for flute/voice on texts by Allen Ginsberg, complete the program.

Misurell-Mitchell, a member of the faculty of the School of the Art Institute and 6Degrees Composers, has presented solo concerts of her music in venues from Mexico City to Tapei. Gillen-Hannau is an actor/musician on faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago and is a member of Trade Winds Ensemble, a group dedicated to giving workshops and programs that explore music as a tool for social change.
