Event Description

Sounds of the Chicago River is an interactive performance for families and children that explores the many ways that wildlife sounds can be captured and expressed through live chamber music. The ensemble performs works by composers who have captured habitat and animal sounds through music, using both traditional and extended techniques on each instrument. Engaging with Deep Listening practice, participants hear and identify river wildlife and habitat sounds, then experiment with ways to imitate those sounds themselves and through live instruments performed by members of Fifth House Ensemble. Throughout the performance, students learn about the flora and fauna of the Chicago river, how to assess the river’s health and changing landscape, and learn about river conservation, including humans’ role in stewarding the river’s wildlife habitat.
