Shi-An Costello’s Alloy Project explores the playful, fresh and unique sound worlds created by the “prepared piano.” Rooted in the post-WWII experimental traditions of John Cage, the music in this concert will touch many genres, from The Pixies to Franz Joseph Haydn, to text scores, soundscapes and free improvisation. Alloy is dedicated to the “prepared piano”: the placing of various objects on or in between the strings of the piano, at the intersection of found sound and piano technology. The concert will feature performances by members of the Alloy network Hope Arthur, Nolan Chin, Costello, Jane Marshall, Alex Reyes and Mo Ryan, and the music of Joshua Paul Daniels, Franz Joseph Haydn, The Pixies, Reyes, and the premiere of a new work by Ben Zucker and winner(s) of the Alloy Studies Student Composer Project.
