Fredrick Gifford, composer

Fredrick Gifford is a composer, educator and recording producer. His compositions are never the same twice: they explore openness by incorporating notated materials, live listening cues and performer decisions to shape their real-time unfolding. Commissions and festival performances include TIME:SPANS, Splice, Resonant Bodies, SEAMUS, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik (AUT), Festival Internacional de Música Contemporánea (MEX), Darmstadt (DEU), soundSCAPE (ITA), Aspen Music and Ear Taxi (USA) and at institutions like the Library of Congress and the Art Institute of Chicago. Gifford (DMus, Northwestern) has taught at schools including DePaul, Northwestern and Roosevelt Universities (USA) and ESMAE (PRT). His sketch study of Earle Brown’s Cross Sections and Color Fields appeared in Beyond Notation: The Music of Earle Brown (Univ. of Michigan Press, 2017). A musical producer from 2007, Gifford has collaborated on over 25 releases for labels including NEOS, New Focus and Numérica. Gifford’s Difficult Grace is the opening track on Seth Parker Woods’s eponymous disc which was nominated for the 2024 Grammy Award for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo.”
